The study investigates and systemises different motivations of EU policy makers for science diplomacy practices. It develops nine role conceptions of EU external science policies with a discourse analysis approach and discusses them in the light of a ‚market power Europe’/‚normative power Europe’ distinction. In that, it contributes not only to the discussion of science diplomacy as a concept but also advances the findings on the specific logic and main ideas behind the evolving EU science diplomacy.
