InsSciDE is now accepting applications to the second edition of its flagship training program.
The European Science Diplomacy Cluster
The European Union is defining its strategy for a regional science diplomacy. Three complementary projects – El-CSID, InsSciDE, and S4D4C – funded by Europe’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme support this endeavour, forming Europe’s first science diplomacy cluster. Through multidisciplinary research and dialogue, the projects generate frameworks for governance, strategic advice, training modules for diplomats and scientists, and groundbreaking knowledge on science diplomacy histories.
What is Science Diplomacy?
Science diplomacy is broadly understood as a series of practices that stand at the intersection of the two fields. These practices can help to address global challenges, promote understanding, and increase influence and prosperity. Science diplomacy has been divided into three phenomena: science for diplomacy – the use of science to advance diplomatic objectives; diplomacy for science – the use of diplomatic action to further scientific and technological progress; and science in diplomacy – the direct involvement of science or scientific actors in diplomatic processes.

Mission of the EU Science Diplomacy Cluster
Each project places emphasis on certain aspects of European science diplomacy research, shining a light on fields such as heritage and archaeological diplomacy (InsSciDE), interlinkages between scientific and cultural diplomacy (EL-CSID), and using science for and in diplomacy for addressing global challenge (S4D4C). Together, the projects offer a comprehensive picture of European science diplomacy.
