APRE – the Agency for the Promotion of European Research has recently joined the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance, strengthening its engagement in European and international discussions on the role of science in addressing global challenges.
For more than thirty years, APRE has supported the participation of Italian research and innovation actors in EU Framework Programmes on R&I, combining information services, training, capacity building and tailored assistance. Through this role, APRE contributes to connecting national research communities with European policy processes and international research and innovation environments, supporting cross-border cooperation as a key enabler of “diplomacy for science”.
APRE’s activities also extend beyond Europe through long-standing cooperation with partners in third countries. The Agency contributes to the Global Service Facility (GSF) of the European Commission (DG RTD), supporting information and training activities for third-country National Contact Points (NCPs), stakeholder engagement and analytical work on international participation in Horizon Europe. Recent activities have focused on regions including the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Gulf countries and Southeast Asia.
In parallel, APRE is directly involved in European and international cooperation through its Projects Department, which participates in and coordinates several Horizon Europe consortia (in all Horizon Europe clusters and thematic areas) and brings expertise in areas such as project management, stakeholder engagement, policy analysis, communication and dissemination. APRE also fosters reflection on science–policy–society interactions through publications and events, including APREmagazine, which regularly addresses topics such as evidence-based policymaking, international research cooperation and the evolving geopolitical context of R&I.
By joining the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance, APRE looks forward to exchanging experience with other members, contributing to joint initiatives and supporting collective efforts to strengthen science diplomacy at European and international level.
